Default alternator problem

i just finished putting my car back together yesterday after taking off the ps pump, alternator, and a/c compressor in order to fix the compressor. when i first took them off, and i disconnected the ps pump, it ended up leaking ps fluid all over everything, especially the alternator. when everything was back together and i started up the car, the alternator was smoking. my question is, what effect would spilling power steering fluid on your alternator have? would it wreck it or would it burn off eventually (causing smoke like that) and be alright? thanks
