Default Problems with ignition

OK, I decide its time to replace my coil because its on its way out. I didn't want to buy a new stock coil because they are too damn expesive. So I go and buy an msd blaster ss coil. Wich is suposedly compatable with my car. To make a long story short I put in the new one and my car starts up after a while and the rpm's just go nuts and the car dies. Now it will just turn over but not seem to get spark. I put the old one back in and the same thing happens... I checked all fuses and my wiring and I'm pretty sure its right. What could it be, did I fry my computer? I dunno Thanx

How did you know it was your coil? Igniters go bad much more often than coils.

What the hell are igniters. Do you mean plugs? If so they are brand new.

Igniters are the little black or brown boxes inside the distributor that tell the coil when to fire. The igniter is basically taking the place of points in the ignition system. And they are well known for failing.

Did you check for spark? You can take a spark plug and hold it to ground, attach 1 wire at a time and have someone crank the car and you watch to see if there is spark. Pep Boys also sells a cheap tool that looks like a fake spark plug with an alligator clip that makes testing easier.

Distributor is new as in new from the dealer , or new as in remanufactured junk from Pep Boys.

Check the ignitor. The blaster SS coil is too big for a stock ignition. If its used without an MSD it will reuin the ignitor. There are resistors that come with some blaster 2's. It gets wired between the power for the coil to reduce the 12v so the secondary voltage isnt so big. With one of those it shouldnt break them but the right thing to do is get an MSD, and a new ignitor.

I think that there's a short between the steering wheel and the drivers seat.Do not make me come over and make you look bad. Well I hope you fix it. I still think it's the coil.

Did you install the ballast resistor for the coil? Does the coil get warm/hot to the touch?

Did not install any resistor because I was told I didnt need it from msd themselves. They said I could use it no problem with stock ignition. The coil does not get warm or gotten wet. I going to try another coil and see what happens.

What made you replace your coil? Were you already having a problem?
