Is it possible to do Compression check w/ motor out of car
say I make a trip down to HMO, could I pick a motor and do the compression test right there? JUst take a big rachet and spin the crank? or is that not possible?
i would think so...i'm not sure...i do know u can jump the starter so the engine can turn to perform a compression check so crankin it manually should get you the desired effect.
It would not be accurate cuz you cant spin it as fast as the starter spins it, and since theres always some leakdown, the slower you spin it the less accurate it would be. and you can use the starter method, but that would require the you have the tranny bolted up to the motor.

there is one way... if the tranny is connected
bring a battery jumper
connect the jumper to the starter it should turn the engine over quick enough to get the numbers
but this is all if the engine has a tranny and if you can find nuetral
bring a battery jumper

if you crank it by hand you should beable to get some compression reading. maybe use a drill with socket to spin it? or something like it.
