Default check compression

is there a way to check compression with the motor out of the car? my motor is on a stand and would like to know if i can check the compression.thanks

I don't see why not....use the crankshaft nut just like you do when you're turning it over to set timing. It will take a while, but shouldn't be a problem.

I have used the starter to check compression on a motor that is out of the car. Just hook it up to a battery. make sure there is plenty of oil in the engine, and it should at least give you a decent idea of the compression, although the compression is going to be different when the engine is warmed up.

It's hard to use the starter if it's on an engine stand (usually no tranny to mount the starter on).

Yeah, i guess that is a good point. I did it on a motorcycle engine with an integrated transmission, so it wasnt a problem.
