Default poor mans gsr?

by using a gsr crank in a b18a along with the gsr girdle, oil pump, forged pistons and rods would this setup be similar to a b18c1 in an ls vtec. i have been reading over ls vtecs for a while and it seems that it would be similar (correct me if im wrong) due to the balancing of the crank along with the rod stroke ratio. if it is would gsr rods work in the setup ok? basically i want to know if i could build a poor mans gsr with an ls block and using the lsvtec oil feed setup. thanks.

for the ls/vtec you have to have the gsr oil pump.... like you said, but using a gsr crank and rods would destroke the engine which is one of the major benefits of running a ls/vtec setup.

yes you can, and its called as poormans gsr. You will have to have some machine work done to make the stock gsr girdle fit the ls mains properly. you will also need to use the vtec oil pickup and windage tray.

is the deck height the same as the gsr block? if so im assuming i could just use the cr ratios for pistons in the b18c1 block then? would type r rods fit with the ls crank? what about the gsr crank? thanks guys.

The deck height is the same, but there are many factors thet create your cr ratio, like how far the piston is in the hole(piston deckheight) combustion chamber volume, gasket thickness, bore, stroke. If you run a ls crank you need to run ls rods which will yeild higher cr than the a gsr crank and rods in the same block. type r rods wont fit a ls crank but will fir a gsr one. So in the end you could run a ls block with a gsr crank and type r rods with a stock gasket and your cr ratio would be about the same as if those internals were in a gsr block.(is that where you were going with this?)

yea thats exactly what i was thinking too. i found a great deal on a b18b block w/ gsr crank so i think i might do that. get everything balanced and decked to make it all fit up. then do a port/polish head with ctr cams and itr intake valves. not sure what compression to run. we have 93 octane here in ohio any suggestions on a good cr ratio? oh yea its gonna be all motor by the way.

I ran 13.1 on 94 oct. But thats with hondata. I say go 12.1 and get it tunned to run on 91 oct, just in case you take long drives and 93 isnt available.

c speed says that if i use ctr pistons along with this bottom end and a b16 head i will put just under 12 and with a 2 layer head gasket i will be at 12. do you think this would be a pretty good setup?

Should be fine, but I'd be a bit concerned about the lack of oil squirters w/ the b18b block & CTR pistons. I really think aftermarket forged pistons may be a better option for you.

would it be the heat that is the problem or what? i was also wondering if i built this motor correctly with using the block girldle from a gsr that it would be as strong of a block as a real gsr or type r? everything will be balanced as closely as possible and ofcoarse using all the necessary parts like oil pump and pickup. i guess my main concern is if the block will withstand the stresses and what pistons i should run. thanks fellas
