Default pinging...

i drive a 93 integra RS (b18a)
just recently i have noticed that my engine is pinging at 3200 to 3300 rpm. i'm running super unleaded (92 octane) in it.

i never noticed it until after i installed this Greddy 4-2-1 SS header (the header came off a 98 gsr, and i had to weld the o2 sensor bung into my test pipe approximately where it would have been on my stock down pipe)

I have a CAI (generic) and also have the greddy sp exhaust.

what i'm trying to figure out is why it pings just at 3200-3300 rpm.. and what i can do to get rid of the ping.

i have a performance ecu chip coming in the next couple of days, i was thinking maybe i'm running lean at 3200-3300 and the chip would help take care of that.

i dont have a timing light so i'll have to take it over to a friends house to check the timing when he gets back from his vacation.

any ideas as to why its pinging tho? any ideas how to get rid of it if the timing is ok and the performance chip doesnt stop it?

thanks in advance.

Are you sure it's pinging? Since you only noticed it after you modified your exhaust path, I suspect that it's a resonation eminating from your header or cat area.

It's a common affliction for B18C Integras to have a buzzing exhaust problem at almost that exact RPM range. It seems that the high revs of the engine prematurely fracture the exhaust manifolds. Unfortunately, the fracture isn't visible to the naked eye.

Is it more of a buzzing or tinkling sound? If you got the header used off of someone's '98 GS-R, do you suppose that it's possible that he sold it because it was buzzing?

its not buzzing.. i have a vibration at 1800 rpm, and that is magnafied cuz the joint from the header to the test pipe flanges are hitting the support beam that the g2 tegs (not gsr) have. i had to notch it a bit, but i think i'm gonna have to notch it a bit more so it doesnt hit the support beam.

the sound i'm hearing at 3200-3300 rpm sounds like a tinkling, my fiance's old toyota corolla pings really bad so i know what it sounds like.

I have a 97 accord,,,,,,,, same deal only at different rpm ranges, 3500-4500 under hard acceleration. Never hear it down low or higher. I replaced the O2 sensor (the old one had 80k+ mi on it).

I am suspecting clutch/throwout bearings. Anyone have any other ideas?

If it was the throw out bearing than you would only hear it when the clutch is pressed in. Noises are hard to diagnois without hearing them first hand.

if it's pinging... retard the timing.. and see if it stops...
or install a water injection.. and see if it stops.

how would that solve anything........a lot of cars with a test pipe do this, mine as well.....do u have a heat shield still on ur car..if so take that off...my 2nd gen integra use to ping at the same rpm.....I took of the heat shield and it went away.....I am gong to take off the heat shield of ny ek as soon as I get some free time...damn I need to stop procrastinating
