Default P72 & Knock sensor

situation: obd1 p72 ecu, and no knock sensor hooked up

does it run in limp mode? feels like the car is slow in the upper end of the rpm range. feels like vtec not engaged.

no doubt, if you have no knock sensor it will pull timing and
overfuel. VTEC should engage... but whats the point without
the right maps? hope you get it worked out.

VTEC wont engage and you should be getting CEL if with P72.

VTEC WILL engage. This is a fact.

Just hook up the KS and be done with it.

so what is exactly happening when you ground the pin for say...the knock sensor? i heard that doing this keeps the cel off, but what does the computer think of this and what happens with say the maps and timing? thanks.

I'm experiencing a very similar situation:

92 dx B18c (jdm GS-R) swap, all wires to ECU are connected and pinned, The car runs great and hits VTEC for about 5 minutes then loses top end power and throws 23. I've checked connections and they're all good, reset ECU by negative terminal removal, and yet I still throw 23...?

any suggestions?

what are the tests for a faulty knock sensor?

i am running a midly built 99 b16a2 with no knock on a P2T ECU and only get a MIL. Need to hook it back up. I dont think there is a power loss.

Also I am running 18 degrees BTDC and +7 in intake and -2 on exhaust. Car pulls good up top.

your definatly will see a performance difference between a ecu which throws CEL (crtical one )and one which does not. not only is the timing retarded but the overall maps are very weak

how do i know, as i have done that one a dyno P72 with connected knock =
173whp
p72 with disconnected knock = 156whp

most losses start past 6000rpm

other suggestion is to have it rechipped or simply buy a chipped p28

connect it back up and see a dyno again a definate change
