Default Oil Pressure Sensor

I was channging my oil today and noticed that the wire going to my oil pressure seensor was ripped off. Is there anny other reason for having it hooked up other than the oil pressure light? I did a search but found contradicting answers.

Yeah it warns you when your oil pressure drops, but by the time it warns you its usually to late.

Mine's been hanging free in the breeze for about six months now... too lazy to fix it

I have an oil pressure gauge so who cares about the light
