lsd or open diff

I imagine the LSD would cause more stress to they tranny, just because it is putting more power to the ground, and probably because the initial "jolt" would be greater.
I wouldn't think it makes a difference to the axles.
I'm just thinking here, though. No actual experience.

I don't think the stress would be that much greater, and I don't think it's a valid reason for running on an open differential. Running on quarter throttle would also put less stress on the transmission, but I wouldn't advise it as a good racing strategy, especially when the thing is built to take like 5x any stress it will ever see. Honda transmissions aren't generally considered to be a weak link.

Alot of ppl on the forum run open diff and have a choice. Im just trying to get the truth behind what causes more stress on the transmissions. LSOS sounds right though with his previous reply.

Its slower. Period. I don't think you are going to find anyone who races with any serious intent who wouldn't choose an LSD over an open diff.
As far as 'stress' , ANY performance mod that adds power adds stress.

Right. If you want to not run LSD because of stress on the tranny, you might as well take out the engine, too. The tranny will practically last forever.
It kind of defeats the purpose of what you are trying to do though. Seriously, concentrate on the things that matter first. The tranny is the last thing you have to worry about.

I run a 89 civic with an LS motor.....and a y1 LSD tranny. Everyone is right if you want to drag race and have a choice definately go with LSD. Unfortunatley with my car and the grippy tires I run I've run into all sortsa problems. Ripped one engine mount off the frame. Cracked my rear engine cradle welded it back and recracked and broke welds on it (will replace it soon).
So the real question would be....would I still go with the LSD...with out a doubt.

Except for the kid that lost his civic on Pinks.

Let's clear up the stress issue. LSD is better for the tranny in race conditions, it distributes power evenly. An open diff only spins one tire and actually wears out the differential quicker.
LSD does however, does put more stress on axles b/c there is little or no give for either side.
As far as which is better for drag, LSD all the way.

The open differential is more prone to fail, from what I understand. But, I would think that the actual gears in the transmission are stressed more with an LSD. Again, not that this is really an issue unless you're making so much power that you already upgraded the clutch, axels, tires, engine, engine mounts, frame, and pretty much everything else.
