Lowering the Engine in the Engine bay
Hi there all
*disclaimer* I did try a search but it tended to bring up 100's of topics on general suspension lowering and nothing on what im realy after, however if theres is a thread then im sorry but i did try to find it. I also appologise if this is the wrong section.
Anyway on with the show:
I have a 1991/92 EG5 Civic hatchback that ive stripped to a bare shell and im rebuilding (once its been for a respray) into a track car with a B16B engine, gearbox (tranny) with hassport front upper mounts, and standard front lower and rear mounts with urethane inserts etc blah blah blah.
My question is this, would it be possible to drop the whole engine about 30mm (an inch or so) lower in the engine bay to aid in a lower centre of gravity? and thus more stability?
Has anyone done this? or has any links to any info?
Now my basic thinking goes like this, theres 5 engine mounts. The front lower two should be easy enough with some 30mm spacers i can get made up (i need to check the mounting bolts will be ok naturaly). The top two engine mounts - my 1st idea would be cut off the chassis mounting points and re-weld them to the chassis 30mm lower, but i would like to hear if anyone has any other ideas on this?
The biggest problem i can see is the rear engine mount that bolts to the steering rack and cant realy fix down any lower, unless i can some how adapt the upside down "L" kind of shaped bracket that attach's the mount to the engine (sorry bad description).
Or am i talking out my rear?
many thanks from accross the pond

What your trying to do, while interesting, seems pointless for a little more than an inch. Unless you adjust your suspension accordingly(if you even figure out a way to modify your rear mount) the angle of your axles will be even worse in relation to your steering knuckles(spindles). that is unless your car is not lowered.
Bloody good Luck chap!

in theory it seems like a great idea, for the rear you would need to make a custom mount bracket that will bolt up and still reach the rear mount. also dont forget to custom bend your exhaust/header sicne that will be sticking down a lot lower as well, and you dant wnat to drag your exhaust system all over.
that is true ^ you'll most likely encounter some problems when lowering the car. just seems like a lot of time/money/thought/planning/labor/headaches involved to gain about an inch of advantage in center of gravity. IMO if you want a car with a distinct handling advantage, then concentrate on suspension modification and chassis reinforcement.......then you'll have a car that sticks to the ground like stink on $hi+.
