Supporting engine without a engine crane; will this work?...
Ive finally got time to get on and change out my cradle but my engine cranes bust!
so Im considering doing this but I want to make sure the 2x side motor mounts wont be damaged or the engine wont 'twist' backwards! (Its Prelude with H22a)
Heres what Im thinking: 1x Trolly Jack undereath transmission at the lowest point (as the trany is behind the engine and below it so I 'assume' that if it was unsupported it would cause te engine to lean bacwards in the bay causing damage to the mouts amongst other things.)
1x Lowentry proffesional jack (big with wide lifting plate) under rear section of the cradle.
I'm thinging of first unbolting the front engine mount and removing the front section of the old cradle, the centre member and putting the new front piece up there, then unbolt and slowly lower the old cradle and drain the PAS system and disconnect and slide it out.
My concern is if the engine will be 'balanced' (IE no ability to twist bakwards!) with the jack under the transmission. The car is currently on axle stands with no front suspension (all stripped down) and radius rods removed
Do you guy who've worked on Ludes think this will work?
Cheers

So its just 'making sure the engine wont 'twist backwards' *(whilst only supported by the two side engine mounts) If i support the transmission&engine with a 2nd Trolly jack
do you think this Is good enough support?
oh and here the thing im relpacing..

if I was in your situation, I would simply put a jack under the midpoint of the transmission (under the clutch), and leave the other three mounts attached. Removing the intake manifold will help you look down there and have a good view of what you are doing.
I have had my motor suspended by the side and front mounts on a few occasions, with no jack underneith, and it was fine. The motor drops maybe an inch but its nothing to worry about. The jack would reduce the stress on those mounts if you are concerned about them though, and you would eventually need to use the jack to lift the mount up to bolt it in properly.
If you need to replace the front one also, I would just do one at a time, so that the motor is always suspended by 3 mounts. You won't have any problems that way at all

Good point (i was considering doing it in one swoop)! Cheers mate
Im hoping the car is high enough not to have to remove the IM though.

Thatll be ok as ive got a second jack
Thanks for confirming the supporting point of the gearbox for me, Ive got it sat uderear there ready so Ill do this in te next day or so!
