Default ignition timming help

Hi
Need some help yet again, we sorted out the overheating problem, and replaced the head gasket. Now we need help on the ignition timming. Its an 1986 honda 1500 SOHC. With a weber 36 DCD carb, custom could air intake and custom eaxhaust, the head was skimmed twice now, the second time due to a blown head gasket, cam was a litte reprofile for low down torque. When we replaced the head the crank was placed on TDC, and the cam marks aligned to the head. Everything top dead on, no problem, but trying to adjust the ignition timming we could set it right. When we fully advance the distributor the mark only moves half way between the TDC mark and the other three marks, when we retard it it moves back towards TDC.

The car runs fine but tends to run a little hot when running it hard. Any clues how we can rectify this, would a adjustable cam gear help or could we extend / slot the holes of the distributor to turn it further back. Can we turn the distributor further back than its original position or not.

Any help please
