Car, Engine? Usually a diagnostic plug above passenger kick panel. Do you have a service manual?

put a paperclip in the little blue plug near the ecu area (near passenger side right foot), turn key to 2 position, and read the codes: 1 long beep = 10, 1 short beep=1. After the code is done, there will be a long pause. If that is the only code, it will repeat it over and over, if there is a new code, it will do that one next. That is why you should wait until you see the first code repeated-so you know you checked them all. Then turn off the car and remove the paperclip.
