Default Honda Del Sol trunk stuck closed

I went to go pull my trunk release handle on the ground and I felt a snap. Took apart the assembly and tried to pull the wire by hand but it snapped somewhere in the middle and just pulled straight out. My car never came with the trunk key either. How would I go about even getting the trunk open to get this fixed?

I’ve basically got the same problem. Looks like nobody’s got any suggestions? The power rear window means trying to get into the trunk from the passenger compartment would be a massive project at best. All I can think of is either try to work a jimmy past the trunk seal above the license plate, or destroy the trunk lock by drilling it out and then fishing for the trunk release rod. All my other ideas are variations of “chop big holes in car’s sheet metal” (the trunk lid or the area behind the license place, for example)

Someone on reddit told me to drill into the trunk behind the license plate to hit the inner mechanism with a screwdriver. It worked amazing. I can send videos for instruction if youd want

Just use a worn out key, it's a Honda.

Oooo, funny. And not even marginally helpful. I have the key. But since the lock isn't attached to the rod that pushes the latch, I can twiddle the lock all day long and it won't accomplish anything. If the lock were useful, I wouldn't have bothered posting here in the first place. So far, the 2nd best suggestion I've found is smashing the right rear taillight and removing the assembly to gain access to the trunk. The best one is drilling a hole behind the license plate in just the right spot to get a screwdriver in there to push the latch mechanism. The original poster had success with a 21/32nds (I have no idea why such a weird size) hole drilled 1 7/8ths to the left of the right-hand license plate mounting hole, and 9/16ths below a line drawn between the two plate mount holes.

Just in case anybody else wants to jump in and offer an opinion who doesn't actually know much about del Sols, no, you can't access the trunk from the passenger compartment.

From the factory, all the locks use the same key. When I got my first del Sol, it came with one key for the ignition, another for the trunk, and a third for the interior locks for the gas lever and the back storage compartments. Obviously, somebody had broken and replaced the ignition and trunk locks but was too lazy to get them rekeyed. So one day I drove to my local locksmith, walked through the door, and handed him those two lock cylinders to have them reconfigured to match the gas/compartment key. "It'll be $60 for both, and will take me a few minutes. You're welcome to come back later."

"That would be tricky. The ignition lock for the car I arrived in is now in your hand."

I'd looked up the procedure for removing them, and practiced at home. Wasn't very hard. So, drove over there, and popped the locks out in his parking lot before I walked in. So, if/when you do get the trunk open, you might want to get the trunk lock reset to match your ignition key.
