help bad idling
I have a 98 itr motor bought brand new from dealer got about 5000 miles on it with a 2000 itr head arond 40000 miles in my eg hatch. Everthing is stock except for the i/h/e and kenji ecu. As i was driving one day i decided to practice my launch from a stop. My car was driving in perfect conditon until this point. So when i drove it i missed fourth, in doing so i rev the engine pretty high, then the car sounded like it was knocking. I thought i blew my engine cause of the way it sounded, but then i notice my fly wheel was loose so i fixed that. Now when i turn the car on it idles real low like around 800 rpm and sounds like it wants to turn off. I can also hear that the valves got louder. Do you all think it can be a bent valve. I went ahead and did a compression test these are the #'s 210 125 210 210. Well if anyone knows what can possibly be let me know thanks.
sounds like you bent a valve on the number two cylinder...pour a couple drops of oil in the cylinders before you compression test your motor just to make sure it is the valves and not the rings. those number seem a little low for a type-r motor. might as well pull the head too.
well the idling is probably due to bent valves, but thats my best guess. valves can easily cause a car to idle bad. i would get it fixed as soon as possible. continued driving may cause ever more piston damage and possibly cylinder wall damage.
if you have to drive it, take it really easy. have you lost power??? are you getting any blow by? maybe its not the rings, could just be bent valves.

blow by....you mean a lot of air coming out from where the oil cap goes? if so, there is a lot of air coming. compared to my motor, he has a lot more air.
the car still pulled hard when we went for a drive. it didn't feel like anything was wrong with it, but the compression on the #2 cyl is very low.
when you rev the motor, it kinda sounds like you hear a little metal hitting metal, but i need to hear it again to make sure.
i did a valve job on his car after the first compression test. the valves were very loose. i could fit a .013 feeler gauge in there. i set the intake side to .007 and the exhuast side to .008. we then redid the compression, but the numbers still came out the same.
we added a cap full of oil in cyl #2 and the compression number went up to 210 just like the other ones are. people say that it could be the rings, but he's not throwing out any smoke from the exhuast and the spark plug from that cyl isn't covered in oil. i've also heard it could be the ringlands though.
how much more would a leak down test tell us? either way, the head is going to have to come off, but we would like to pin point what the problem is first.

if you have alot of blow by, which is steam like smoke coming out of the oil cap, it means that you have leaking between the rings and the cylinder wall. if this is the case, it is blowby. this is something that you should fix asap because its not good for your motor. when you pull the head off, take off the oil pan from underneath and unbolt the rod bolts and check the pistons. its not much more work and youll be able to put new rings in.
checking the pistons will give you your answer for sure and you wont need a leak down test.

glad to hear it..i thought for sure it was the rings because you put oil in that cylinder and it upped the compression. usually thats because of the rings.
