Default Gas Meter Innacurate

Does anyone know how to fix a problem with the gas meter because mine is really innacurate and it is changing from time to time. It doesnt change that much but it is still not the same as the time i turn my engine off. And i know it does not represent the exact amount of gas i have left in the tank.

Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

It would be helpful to know what kind of car this is.

This is usually the case.
