Gas meter floats alot
I have a 97 Civic LX stock, and right now im at 225miles with a little under half a tank. The problem is when im driving the needle can almost float down too the E, so what the heck. How am I aspose to really know when my gas is going to run out? Am I just going to have to take one for a chance and drive it till it goes out to get an idea of how long I can go. Last time I let it run this low sometimes going on a hill or turn the gas light would come on then It would float back up and go off so Im not sure how much I really got left. Anyone else have this problem? And how should I go about solving how much I got left?

- Find out how much gas your fuel tank holds
- Calculate your gas mileage on your next few tanks of gas
- Average those several mpg ratings together
- Based on that average, calculate how far you can go on a full tank of gas
- Never go that far or you may run out of gas

Im at 250miles and If I park on a incline it will make my gas light come on, but once I start driving it will go a good bit above the line and the E light will go off. Also I guess I need a tune up cause I should be at more than 250miles right now I would think.

U should try having a boosted honda.
I watch my fuel gauge go from 1/2 to E when bang through the gears, then after I slow back down to normal and drive, it goes back up.
For me, since I have an upgraded fuel pump and **** it is because the stock fuel return cannot return the fuel fast enough to the tank. It also causes your motor to run ruch as the pressure in the rail/lines is too great and actually forces extra fuel out of the injector into each cylinder.
One way to relieve this is to drill a .035" hold at a downward angle into the fuel return. There is a write up on http://www.theoldone.com, here it is:

I know mine as well as a lot of other people's fuel gauges fluctuate a lot. Mine isn't near as bad as some I have seen, but I just stop my car on a flat street and give it about 10 seconds, and that is usually an accurate reading.

My 94 Civic CX has major fluctuations when it's low. Usually when I'm at 250miles on the trip meter, the gauge says E. Then when I drive, it can go as high as 1/4 tank. On my last fillup, I drove another fifty miles (300 on the trip) and filled up. The car still only fit 8.4 gallons at a complete top off. I think my car has an 11 gallon tank...

You pull 300 miles driving normally or babying it? My car is an automatic and I force it too shift normally before it goes over 3k rpm and Im still only pulling that. I know your prolly going 4k when accelerating which is normall driving for me. The car has ran like this since I got it used, I guess I should try new plug wires, spark plugs, fuel filter, the air filter on the top of the engine is fine, but Im not sure what the other black box is where the air intake pipe runs down to the bottom left. Also since my gas is getting low it takes a couple cranks to make the car start could this be bad spark plugs?

So that means even If I go up a hill it floats down and the gas light comes on Im still ok because there is a good ammount of gas left right? Thats what im trying to figure out on where is the point that I should refile up

Re: Gas meter floats alot (HNP)
Yeah my dad just refiled my tank last night and to fill it up it only took 9gall even, and its a 11.9 gal tank. So even though my needle was going that low it still had alot and I had 252 on it so that was about 28mpg.
