Modified by dumpeDc2 at 9:39 AM 11/4/2004</TD></TR></TABLE>If they're a little loose the worst that will happen is a little more blowby. If they're too tight and you get ring bind, your engine is fubarred. Right on the money is best of course. You decide.

I'm assuming you had the block honed right? Your gonna need to check the rings in each cylinder with a feeler gauge use .016 so if you put your ring in #1 cylinder and it reads .018 you'll need to get a ring grinder out and take .002 off of it to achive the .016 and you'll have to repeat this process in all 4 cylinders hope this helps

Now I don't put many motors together, as the ones I deal with don't break very often. But it seems to me that if you have a larger gap than the spec, and you go grinding away, you're going to end up with an even larger gap. .018 + .002 = .020

Since you don't know the right specs for the rings I'm going to go ahead and assume you also don't have or know how to use a ring grinder, correct? So take it to someone who does and you'll be ok.Rings are the sealing point of the engine if there wrong the motors useless.

Yikes! Are you sure this is how it's done?

ok I just got a ring grinder so alls I need to do is gap them with a feeler gauge. but to find the gap for the JE rings they say take the boreX.005=the ring gap needed . So how do I fint the bore without a micrometer? it is a vergin 99ls block that I had bored 20 over what's the bore size?

Don't take this the wrong way but do you know how to grind rings? It's not just put the ring in and grind away, yaknow. The ring needs to be square at the meeting ends and they need to be deburred corectly after grinding, have you seen it done before? Is that block bored .25 over in mm or .020 in standard? An ls bore is 81mm or 3.159.

no I have never grinded rings or event seen it done but I think I got a pritty good idea on how to do it. when I ordered the pistons I asked for 20over bore for a b16sence im useing a b16 head.but on the je spec. sheet it says bore 3.209 (81.51) it aslo said for a type R motor on the box but I dont know what that is for the part # is 188982.
Ok i rechecked my math and it was off,a mm is about .039 so .020 over is right at .5mm so your ok.I hope your right w/the rings I'd hate to see you post later that you have low compression or have blowby into the crankcase.
