Default first time gapping piston rings. need some help from the pros!!!

i have a 84 mm block and pistons. the weisco pistons say gap the rings .004 per inch and a little more for performance engines. it's for a turbo motor so what should my ring gap be? any advice on how to do it? this will be my first time doing this.

i can't help you with the gap. But do this. Use the piston and push the ring into the cylinder about an inch from the top. Measure gap with feeler gauge. Make sure in spec

Then use the piston and push it down about one inch from the bottom of where the cylinder travels up and down, and check gap. Make sure within spec.

When running on a turbo car your car runs "hotter" than a normal car. this causes the rings to expand more. When you are putting together a high HP motor it is reccomended to run "looser" tolerances because of the higher heat generated.

It's not super critical that you specifically run a bigger gap but if wheen you are checking your clearances and they are all coming up on the tighter side of the spec I would definately file your rings down so that theycome up on the high side of the spec.

I run the ring gap on turbo motors at .006" per inch of bore for the upper and .0045" per inch of bore for the middle ring. Don't touch the oil ring.
Be sure to deburr the area after filing in the gap.

Larry likes his clearances very tight. The tighter you make them, the more power you will make. On the other hand, if you get the motor too hot, the ring ends will butt together and hurt the walls and rings.
