well about 2 months ago i instal my toda flywheel, clutch, pplate, and b16 tranny I noticed that after i did a burn out at the track to heat up the tires. it seemed that clutch would be slipping while i gave it gas. now that i am rebuilding the engine i noticed that the clutch if fine but the flywheel seemed to be burned up has burn marks on it. was i suppose to scuff up the fly wheel before the install or is something wrong. and should i get the flywheel resurfaced before the reinstall.

damn, can you say heat?

 

when you install a new flywheel you need to clean it off realy well to get the residue off like w/ brake rotors. you need to have the flywheel ground but it looks to bad to have it resurfaced. it needs to be heat treated or whatever they do to remove the heat checking... which might cost more than just replacing it witha new one.

 

Check to see if your clutch is slightly disengaging, like if the cable was too tight. This can cause it to slip constantly and may be the source of the extra heat.

 

i have a hydro tranny no cable the wierd thing is i cleaned it off like 4 times with brake cleaner. this pisses me off are you sure that i might need a new flywheel i thought i could just resurface and get rid of the hot spots. damn it this sucks

 

i would get a new one...........

and stop doing burn outs........

 

ok but what would i do to stop it from happening to the next one i mean i had it for 2 months how should i clean it.

 

Isn't that just a case of improper break in? If you have two smooth surfaces because they're new they just spin and heat up. This is the whole purpose behind slowly breaking your clutch in over 500 miles.

 

If toda gives specs on resurfacing their flywheel I'd give it a try and see what it looks like after you take some surface off. It may be too bad to reuse it.

**** though.. how bad was this burnout? Did you slip the clutch pretty hard at high rpm?

If not, something went wrong somewhere.. and the only thing you can do is try again.

 

what type of clutch are you using? are you running slicks? ur flywheel looks fawked. i did probably 20 plus burnouts and lots of hard shifting, clutch dropping in my civic (clutchmasters flyhwheel) 10,000 miles later.. it looked the same as when i put it in.

 

i have toda clutch kit and i did do proper breaking no slicks. and i didn't slip the cluch

 

i think your lying..about how you did the proper break-in procedures,eheh next time dont be trying to do burnouts,there is no point,unless your a profesional racer,are you?burnouts are not cool..when i see peeps doing burnouts i think to myself what a waste of time/tires,the cars probably gonna break,lol

 

I really did break in. and as for the burn out i ussaully don't do it.

 

Do you have a subscription to Sport Compact Car magazine? If so, check out volume 15, No. 09, September 2003 issue...

The Project Silivia car is featured in this issue, and on page 118, a TODA chromoly flywheel with nearly identical heat problems shows up.

As it states in the article, the flywheel was re-usable, BUT make sure whoever does the refurbishing work is aware that it is CHROMOLY steel they are working with...otherwise, the machinist is going to break every bit in his tool box.

Anyways, anyone familiar with metallurgy (metal study)? If so, I thought chromoly was a TOUGH steel alloy. I would assume that some of the alloy added to the steel heats up and causes burn marks?

Just get the flywheel resurfaced. Looks like you just glazed it.

 

Resurfacing the fly wheel should work just fine, as for burnouts you don't need to do cuz it does not help you at all unless you have slicks. The all season tires are meant to run better when are at ambient temp. Good luck. 98ctr

The clutch disc or pressure plate should have come with a spec sheet that says how high the friction surface of the flywheel should be above the part the pressure plate bolts to. If that distance is not correct the clutch will not work properly. Too far and the clutch will not release properly, too close and it will slip.

 

but when your at the track if u have decent tires and can warm them up i have seen peeps drop tenths off their 60s, also where u running drag ET's.
doing burnouts in the waterbox with snow tires doing brunouts with performance tires and warming them up and then getting setup quick is good.

 

street tire burnouts = BAD and POINTLESS
Slick burnouts = GOOD and USEFUL
