Default Faulty VAFC?

I think my VAFC could be bad. Here's the scoop. I was running with a map sensnor cell, My boy and I installed my VAFC. Didn't do too much tuning then drove the car up to another friends house. On the way after a bit I couldn't rev past 5k. At my friends house he hooked up his computer erased the code and then we went for a spin to tune the VAFC. Got done doing that all is great. Car is running sweet and no CEL's. I leave, on my way home (45min) as i get off the highway I get a CEL and then I can't rev past 5k again. I drive to my house and park her. The next day I get in and start to take my car to my boys house again, and I can rev past 5k again? all is good everything felt like after the tunning. At his house we swp out the map sensor thinking that that is the culprit for the problem of CEL and fuel cut off at 5K. Take the car for a run after installing the new sensor... again all is good. Still had the CEL since I didn'thy have the computer to reset the code and I wanted to view it before erasing (just incase) I drive home... no problems. This morning I'm driving into work (1.5hours) maybe an hour into it i can't rev past 5k again. The wiring seems to be all correct we checked 3 times each. The only thing I can think of is the VAFC. Is it known to go bad or be bad. It does get real hot? (the actual VAFC that is) I'm kinda at a loss here....

I've never heard of that one. Why don't you pull the plug on the a'pexi unit, and temporarily reroute that one wire to the ECU...I forget which one it is I think it's blue. Anyway, so you're basically removing the Vafc from the loop, reset the ECU, and then try it. Are you sure the Vafc was initialized and setup right?

I'm positive it was installed right as far as teh set-up. I assume he did everything right. At first we hadn't initialized it but after my friend hooked up his computer, reset the ecu and tunned it, it all seemed to work great temporarily. Is the VAFC supposed to get HOT. not just warm but hot? I'll look into removing the VACF and seeing if any problem exsists then we can pin poin the problem more, even though it seems to be pointing that way anyway...

No it should not be hot. Unless it's on the dash in direct sunlight of course. Sounds like something is not right either with the unit or the install.

I just went to the apexi site and looked over the troble shooting. I printed out their US install chart, I don't know if it is the same as the one i used, that came with the unit. I'm going to also check the settings supposedly if the throttle is set +12-14% the car thinks it's running boost and will throw a map sensor CEL. But the 5K rev limit is still odd, unless that is the reult of the Map sensor? Oh and the last thing they said to check was also the pressure sensors... 6 in and 6 out...

Not the throttle. If you set the unit to add more then about 15% fuel at any particular point it will throw a code. It will not however send the car into limp mode. A solution to this problem is boosting the fuel pressure via adjustable FPR or using larger injectors. I believe you can lower the fuel at any point to it's max without throwing a code however. Yes check the settings for sensor type.

Looking at both wiring diagrams i don't think that is installed correctly. But will update later...

I know they've had a couple errors on their wiring diagrams. I had some kind of addendum when I got mine, but it's been so long now I don't recall what they goofed up on the original.

The one that came with the VAFC dosen't have the blue(vtm) wire connect to anything it's actually not even listed....

So I got to do that and I think the ground has changed? The diagrams are saved with such poor resolution it's hard to tell...

It was the VTM wire. Wired t up. Took about 30 sec. ECU isn't throwing any CEL's And rev is no longer limited to 5k. The VAFC definatly added pull throughtout the RPM range..Such a nice adition... pulled VTEC engagement a bit lower with a bit richer mixture right before engagement.. and just leaned it out a bit throughout.
