Default engine tapping how do i find out where?

i just put a d16z6 into my 90 ef and when i start it something is tapping pretty bad but seems like it goes away or quiets down when i rev it a little. I need to know if there is a way i can check to see if its the head or block without tearing it all apart??? it doesn't sound like a rod knock and i adjusted the valves yesterday but it was my first time doing it so i might have messed up a lil. anyways, please let me know what you guys think or a method to check it out without tearing it down. thanks in advance

-Steve

Use a stethescope. They are amazingly accurate at pinpointing the origins of engine noises.

or you can use a ghetto mechanics stethescope --> a metal prybar w/ your ear up to it. And move the bar to diff points on the motor. Works everytime... and it's something that you are more likely to have around the garage.
