Engine Decision -- B17 vs B18C
gsr swap around here is about 4500... i can get this 1.7 longblock for $600 and P61 ecu for $100.. I dont want the tranny he is selling so thats why its cheaper.
But if you are going for speed which one will be faster stock vs. stock??? I guess you're right if it doesn't matter but the 2 DOHC VTEC motors that I hate the most are the B16/17A... I dunno, the B18C 1.58 R/S is good enough for me... Good torque and winds just fine... Just my opinion... Peace
The b16a w/ it's near perfect geometry would be a fantastic engine, were it not for the lousy stroke...77mm. That's where the b17s 81.4mm stroke comes in. Does it have as much low end torque as a b18c? Nope, but it does retain a great r/s ratio of 1.68:1. Which says rev me higher. It's a great comprimise between the b16 & b18c, and if they weren't so rare you'd see allot more of them utilized in high end N/A and FI setups. I'd much rather sleeve a b17 to 84-86mm than go with a ls/vtec or crv/tec with it's yucky r/s ratio, poorly lubed crank, extra oil lines, and generally lower reliability. Please don't give me that "if the ls/vtec is built right" garbage either, I ain't buyin'. A bored b17 or stroked & bored b16a should rev much much higher and be far more reliable w/ similar power numbers(though perhaps higher in the rev range) than ls/vtec.
The worst 2 Honda engines to my mind are both the b20s. I just don't care for the comprimise. To each his own however.

How much does sleeving cost?.... yet another interesting idea

GE charges $750 for sleeves. They can do 81-85mm for that price. Their godzilla sleeves are $850 and can be 81-86mm. A cheaper option would be Darton flanged sleeves. They're $48 each as I recall and can be bored to 83mm. The local machine shop quoted me $100/cylinder for install on this setup.
