Do I need to use phosphate free coolant?
I changed my coolant the other day and used this brand called Mototech. I thought they were all the same, but now I read here that I should have used Honda coolant. The Mototech stuff has phosphates. Should I change it again or is it fine? It's a B16 CRX.
I would use Honda coolant. THat way you don't need to worry about a seal going out as much or water pump, radiator, etc. I think last time I bought it at dealer it was about 10 or 12 bucks.
i just use extended life prestone. its suppose to be silicate and phosphate free. saved 5 whole dollars by not going to the dealer.
yeah, just check the ingredient list on the back. I found cheese-ball Target brand "Car and Driver" coolant was phosphate free...
Coolant? I'm running straight water + waterwetter!
Works only in LA though, with a garaged car...
Prestone extended life 50/50 works pretty well for coolant. They're the new red stuff, not the old green stuff...

i was under the impression that some of the ingredients from coolant were necessary. fill me in here.
i am well aware that water has better cooling abilities, as well as the purpose of the water wetter, but no coolant? fill me in.

coolant is usually called "anti-freeze" in other parts of the country besides LA. It lowers the freezing point of water when it's blended in. Coolant is also a corrosion inhibitor....makes it harder for rust to form in your radiator/engine cooling jacket passages.
Really you're going to want phosphate free coolant on anything that has an aluminum radiator.... I know Volkwagon and Mercedes are like this and they require you to use their coolant which is phosphate free because it won't clog the radiator.. For Honda I just use factory or Prestone...

I was thinking of the corrosion part of the equation too. But there isn't much if any corrodable stuff in the cooling system, that I can think of. Water jackets are aluminum; the iron sleeves don't touch water... the head & block is Al. Water pump should not rust. Cross pipes (back of the blocK) are also aluminum.
Long story short: I'm in LA, car parked in garage. It won't freeze!
