checking for continuity means to check that the 2 plces in question have a connection. For example if you test for continuity at both ends of a piece of wire, you should have continuity, unless the wire is cut somewhere. Also, there should be continuity between the car's - battery terminal and chassis ground. If your voltmeter has ohms reading, continuity would be 0 or close to it. If you touch the 2 leads together you should get close to 0(.01 or something). Some meters, my Fluke, for example have a continuity test, labeled with an arrow like you would find on a diode(-&gt that beeps when there is continuity. If you still need help I would need to know what exactly are you testing for continuity?

nah, dont just touch both wires with both of the voltmeter wires.
With the battery connected to the car, and your key turned once (to "on"), take the positive (red) wire from your voltmeter and touch it to the wire on the distributor you are checking, then take the black wire from your voltmeter and touch it to any metal on the car (ground). You should get near 12 volts

The proper way to check for continuoty is to first make sure there is no power and use a multimeter set the check the resistance in OHM's. most meters will beep if you have contiuity but any resistance reading is good. it it says O.L (open loop) it means you have a break somewhere in the connection.

um, correction, i believe that this is not a continuity test that you describe, it is a test to see whether a connection has 12v.

the correct method has been descibed well by the 1st poster

do not confuse people!

OK, set you multi-meter to OHMS (resistance) and check that there is little or zero resistance between the plug and chassis/ground...

ie that there is "continuity" - as defined by http://www.dictionary.com :

the state of being continuous; uninterupted connection or succession; close union of parts;

hope this helps
