Easy Axle Replacement Questions
Hi--
I'm replacing an axle and have a few basic questions:
1) The book says I should drain the tranny fluid before removing the old axle or else it may spill on me. It also says that should grease the new inner spindle that connects to the transaxle to lubricate the reinsertion. Doesn't this mean that the grease will get into the transmission? How come this is OK?
2) When removing the axle , you're supposed to bang on the axle to push it through the hub. Why is there this level of play in the axle itself? How come this is OK?
3) I know that if you overtorque the new axle nut you risk damaging the bearings. It is supposed to be set to 180 ft-lbs. How accurate do you really need to be? A torque wrench with this high a measurement is not the easiest to come by. Do most people just approximate?
Thanks!
Tim

Draining the tranny fluid is an option. I usually just have something to catch it.
I never out any grease on the inner spindle. Are you sure they are not referring to tranny fluid?
And there is no banging needed to get the axle out of the hub. Apparently it seems like you have no wrench turning skills so it might be a little complicated for you but im sure you'll figure it out. Once everything is loose all you need is a flat head to pry it from the transmission.
When retorquing the axle nut. I just use a breaker bar and drop my weight on it. Does the job all the time. Never really used a torque wrench on an axle nut

yeah you could just put a tray to catch the oil just get out of the way and i always like to were safety glasses when im under their prying off the axles.
yeah you do have some play just dont pull to much cuss it will mess it up a little tap will help if not use a ruber mallet and pound away.
but yeah just use a breaker bar and dont forget to crush the nut on the recomended place so it wont come looose

Hi--
I've gotten the old axle out and I'm trying to put the new one in. I'm having a hard time getting it into the transaxle. Can I put grease on the inner spindle? Is there any issue with this grease getting into the transaxle?
Thanks,
Tim

I used grease a couple times around the c-clip if I was having problems getting the thing together. You can also put the other end in the hub and use the whole thing as a hammer to bang the axle in the rest of the way.
Thanks, NetFreak.
I finally got it in through brute force. Just grabbed the shaft and the outer boot and manhandled it in.
Then I spent another hour trying to get the hub and the outer spindle to unite. I finally got it in. There must be some trick to getting those to align easier.
