I dunno about cost, but if you have impact tools, its easier to replace the whole axle. It's one nut, a big hammer and a pry bar to pop it out of the tranny. Rebuilding the CV joint requires taking it out, disassembling the joint (which, if you've never done it before, is a pain in the ***), regreasing and putting it back together. Depending on how long its needed replacement, its probably going to be healthier to replace the axle.

very true
Replacing an axle is extremely easy and can be done with basic tools.
Rebuilding is quite a bit more involved and needs special strapping pliers.

Just hit up autozone and get a lifetime warranty axle. Swap it in yourself - there is a great how-to if you search for it.
Ive done one in 30mins before
(thats without draining the fluid - have the car sit one notch higher on the stands on one side, so it doesnt spill out)

Special strapping pliers cost $9. Band clamps cost $1.

Generally if you catch them when they just start clicking, the grease has just gotten a little dried up and you can clean them out with brake cleaner and squeeze a packet of fresh CV joint grease in them and they are fine. I've never had a set that really needed replacing, although I've had multiple sets that have needed cleaning/grease/new-boots. It doesn't take much longer than swapping in a new set, and I save a lot of money.
