Default DIY intake question...

i am planning on making my own intake. the problem is that i dont know which filter to get...i know i want a K&N "Funnel Ram" Filter, but its 3" and the piping is 2.5"...is it really that big of a deal to use rubber pipe clamps and have a tight fit over the 3" filter and 2.5" piping? or would i be better off getting a 2.5" filter-like AEM replacement? what are some good places where i can get some k&n funnel ram filters or any other air filters??

you could always use the 3" filter and 3" tubing and then have it taper off to 2.5" at the throttle body. i think that would create some nice results considering there will be a reserve of air available. oh yea don't forget to make an icebox if u can.

you could probably make it fit....use some hose clamps or something like that...just make sure there are no air leaks because for obvious reasons that is BAD.

an icebox is used for short-ram intakes. provided you have an outlet/hole to the exterior of the car where the intake filter is, you may be able to do this....but make sure you have that first...my integra has two holes in the engine compartment for air coming into the airbox, originally for the resonators (keeps the intake noise quiet) and the long, skinny, restrictive intake tube that goes from the front grille to the airbox. basically all i did was remove the resonators so that air is forced directly into the stock airbox from the vents on the front bumper. it actually works just as good as any CAI and better than any short ram that ive ever seen, and it has a nice deep growly sound too. can't beat the price either....$40 for a K&N hi-flo filter for the airbox and some 3" hose connected to the holes on the airbox to direct the airflow for the ram-air effect.

hope that helps...probly will if u have a teg
what kind of car do u have?

i don't actually know how to build an icebox but i know a couple people who have...i'm sure there are sites describing how to do it...anyone?

first thing you need to do is to take your resonator off coz you dont really need it..now, you're left w/ just the box.. you have two options..1 is to go Cold air (cai) or you can use just use your stock air box and piping, then buy a drop-in k&n filter (i like this set up better). now all you need to do is cut the pipe you removed w/ the resonator (the part that goes under the box) it's like a U shape plastic pipe.you need this pipe so that it collects fresh cold air from under the body of the car. make sure you cut it right after the first bolt from the box so you can still bolt it in to the body and it wont rattle..goodluck!

well that's nice too.. i used to have and aem cai but i sold it just because i was scared of water getting into my intake manifold (hey its just me, personal preference ok) so to be on the safe side, i was left w/ 2 choices, comptech ice box or drop in filter w/ cold air pipe collector..just like what roger foo uses at speedvision..

You can go to my webpage at http://www.geocities.com/bretq/DIY_Icebox_CAI.html for information on making your own "Icebox" CAI. My setup is nearly identical to the Comptech Icebox, but it cost a fraction of the cost (approx. $10).
