Detonation when car is cold??
I have a 94 civic 4 door LX. Only when my car has been sitting over night it will Detonate. I do let it warm up for about 5 minutes but it still does it. The only time that it stops is when it has been driving for about 10 to 20 minutes ( I have let it warm up for that long but it is not practical for me to do that on a daily basis). And it is bad, it will even do it in reverse. I have checked the timing and it is ok. As for gas I only run 91 in it. If anyone could tell me how to fix it I would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!
are you sure its detonating...
its prolly knocking...
Check your oil pressure, thats why it only does it when its cold.
Either you have a piston slap or low oil pressure, thats why it goes away when the car is warmed up.

I'm pretty positive it's detonating. It is not a knocking noise at all.
Plus I have had some of my friends look at it and they say the same thing.

detonating on a stock motor isnt likely, and esp when its cold, usually does it under load/high temp situations
if it isnt a knock, but a pop, u could have a piston slapping around...
If you have a stock motor, your wasting your money on 91 gas also...

If it does it when it's cold and not under much load, and everything in the motor is stock, then it is NOT detonation.
It's prob. some sort of slap. Check for the valve timing, a bad bearing, and the such

i agree,i have heard some stock single over head cam engines that are really loud till they are warmed up real good.I bet your engine has just loosened up a bit and your pistons are just rockin around when its cold.
nope, piston slap wouldn't show on a compression test.
I would adjust the valves first and see if it's a valve slapping, or maybe check to make sure the timing belt maybe jumped a tooth, although that would be followed by much more severe problems....
