Default dear god, why me?

Well, here's the story.

I've got an 89 CRX Si with a 96' D16Y8 engine running off an OBD-I p28 ecu. Last friday, the car stalled and would not start. Had it towed home, and I noticed that I could not hear the fuel pump priming. So I replaced it with a holley 190lph pump, wich was the biggest PIA. Tried to start it again, and refused to catch, just like before.
Check for spark, getting none. Tested the coil, turned out to be good. So I replaced the whole dizzy (under warranty) and it fires up. Well, this is good. NOT! The engine runs like crap. Timing is set to 15 degrees, and I installed the dizzy correctly. It idles poorly, and when I drive up a hill, it occasionally surges, and loses major power. Sometimes it tries to stall when it idles. Does this sound like another bad dizzy??? or <shudder> could it be the fuel pump doing this?

Also, go back over your cam/crankshaft alignment... One tooth off on any given cam, can be as much as 18 degrees on the timing...

Hmmm. This may be a stupid question, but doesn't the cam/crankshaft alignment change only when you mess with the cam gear or install a timing belt? I don't know too much about this at all... When I installed the dizzy, I pulled it straight out, and I noticed there was a slot on the cam where it attaches. As long as I install the dizzy into this slot correctly, and adjust the ignition timing, shouldn't that be ok?

<<<<<<<<UPDATE>>> >>>>>.

I just put in another distributor, because it seemed like a dizzy problem... However, it's still surging and idling rough. Just boughta fuel filter and we'll see what happens. If it's still running like shizz, is it likely that I bought a defective fuel pump? Oh god I really don't wanna drop the tank AGAIN....

If it was fine before, meaning ya never had to touch the cam, then the tooth thing won't be an issue. Unless, of course, it skipped a tooth on its own accord...

I never touched the cam, unless you count installing the dsitributor onto it. the cam did move back and forth when I installed the cam, but that's just the timing that needs to be set, right? Did that, and I also just changed the fuel fiter, which didn't really seem to help. Do yo all think that I should change out the Holley for a new one? I can hear it going, but maybe it's just not delivering the gas. I tried to floor it, and it seems to go OK, but the engine is much louder than before, and when I bring it back down th idle is still rough.

you don't have to drop the fuel tank to change the pump! you get to it from removing the back seats and it's right there on the floor. and yes you're right, you don't have to mess with the cam timing, they didn't move out of time while putting on the new dist. the belt was still on. another thing you can do before replacing the pump again is get a fuel pressure gauge and see if you have sufficient pressure.

There's no backseats in a CRX

Seriously, you do have to drop the tank... BIG PITA...

Do you think it's worth getting an in-car pressure gauge so he can test the on-road pressure?

i'm going out on a limb but could possibly the new high performance fuel pump be pushing too much fuel thru your injectors and you are running really rich? just an idea.

Thanks

Why don't you post something useful instead of bitching at me about my writing?

If you can't offer any insight into my problem, I really don't care what you have to say...

As for the pump forcing too much gas to my injectors, don't fuel injectors just draw as much as they need? Doesn't a new pump simply supply the fuel in case the engine demands it? I could be wrong...

The fpr determines how much pressure is put on the injectors, not the fuel pump.

Ok, so is it possible that the FPR is not providing the correct amount of fuel, and therefore the car is running like crap? Also, what is the best way to test for proper fuel pressure?

Are you using an adjustable FPR?

What were you doing just before it stalled on you?

Check the cam/crankshaft alignment, they can and will jump. Also, making a blanket statement, saying something like this did not happen. You are assuming, and you know what happens after that... hehehe

Pull your plugs and check their color, that will tell you if it's running to rich. If that was the case, chances are you would be smelling/seeing fuel, out the exhaust as balck smoke.

I was just driving it normally. I parked it for 10 minutes or so, then started it with no problems. It died after about 30 seconds of idling. I will check the crank/cam alignment tomorrow. It seems to be running better right now... It shakes a little at idle and seems to hesitate a little uphill, but other than that it still pulls hard. I think I'll also do a vacuum test. Timing is set at 16 degrees, running 94 octane gas. I changed the fuel filter yesterday, and that seemed to help a little. I wonder if the plug wires are partly to blame... they are 6 years old. I guess I should change them too. The plugs were a normal brownbefore, but I'll pull em tomorrow anyhoo. Thanks! I'll let you guys know what happens.
