Default crankcase venting question..

I know alot of people use catch cans on there cars to vent crankcase pressure out..

Suppose you have a boosted car and just want to allow positive pressure to vent without the use of a vacuum source.. Wouldnt doing something as simple as putting a breather cover filter on your dip stick line serve the same purpose.. If you didnt care about emmisions that it?

yes the breather will work but oil does come out of the crank case from the pressure. So the catch can does keep the eninge bay cleaner and the vacumm removes more pressure and reduces some of the oil that would create blow by.

Thats what I figured.. Dont you think that if you were to use the dipstick hole that not much if any oil would reach that far due to the oil having to fight gravity to get up there..

yeah not much oil is going to spit out of the brether, but I say spend the extra 80.00 or so and get the greddy catch can. It's going to help out a little bit and give you a little more security, that goes a long way when your boosting a car you have to drive alot.

Actually its just a track car.. But the same still goes.. I just wanted to know basically what all the stink was about with the catch cans.. Its just a fancy crankcase vent filter.. Im going to get a catch can but im not going to use a pre-turbo vacuum source for it or any other type of vacuum source..

Say goodbye to your rings.

Just putting a filter on the valve cover isn't going to remove crankcase pressure effectively. Thats the whole idea behind a catch can, so you can use vacuum to help remove pressure and not get your intake/charge piping full of oil vapors.

I have been running for 8 months on this motor with the pcv system not even hooked up.. And since its a track car I really dont care about the rings.. And I didnt say anything about the valve cover.. I just wanted to know if the crankcase would vent itself with no vacuum..

It will vent itself but not very well. The pressure has to go somewhere. You want vacuum in your crankcase. It helps the rings seal. Making your car run better. I don't want explain all the pros of doing this. If its a track only car get a vacuum pump. I have seen cars just throwing a moroso vacuum pump on gain 30hp on a dyno.
