Default catch can....

I'm curious how exactly the catch works and what are the benifits? I know this sounds like a noob question, but I never really thought about it. I'm sure someone will anwser this in one reply. thanks

They take away the excess pressure from the crankcase wich otherwise would lead to oil consumption (read: higher chance of detonation due to oil in the combustion chambers). Pressure in the crankcase also lead to a higher load on the rod bolts at the valve overlap event and deaccel; I'm sure most people can figure out the exact force excerted on the piston with ~40 in/hg vacuum in the chamber and 15 PSI in the crankcase. Some people even use vacuum pumps to induce vacuum into the crankcase wich actually helps free up power due to less windage loss (and possibly even better oil and oil vapor control). If you do nothing about the stock PCV system, pressure will build up in the crankcase and force oil into the chambers. The pressure will not be equalized until you step off the gas, vacuum appears in the intake manifold and the PCV valve opens.

EDIT:
Also, search.
