code 23
My ECU (PR3) is throwing a code 23. I researched and found out the code 23 is a defective knock sensor or faulty connection to the sensor.
What is the purpose of the knock sensor?
The motor was installed 10K miles ago and the problem just started occuring in the past few weeks.

The purpose of the KS is an engine protection device. When the KS detects detonation/pinging it tells the ecu to pull back on timing (a bit too much tho).
Do you have the KS wired in? 'cuz sometimes, if you don't have it wired in it doesn't throw a MIL code right away, with some cars, as in your case.
A possible option for you (if your interested) is to have your ecu reprogrammed and have the KS disabled completely. Let me know if you're interested

But is it dangerous to run the car without a knock sensor?</TD></TR></TABLE>
no it is not - depending on how you set your engine up though. What engine mods are you planning to do ?

Current mods are an intake, act 8lb flywheel, itr header, test pipe, 2.5" exhaust.
I have a set of 2001 ITR cams being installed next week and being tuned with a VAFC. Then I am getting a clutch and an IM and thats it.
The car is stil running fine, I can hardly tell the difference when the check engine light comes on, there is hardly a difference as far as power goes.
It is actually throwing a code 2 as well, but that's an easy fix.

you'll be fine with a disabled KS then. Having a KS (an aftermarket one) is more manditory to have when your compression levels are higher than 12.0 when naturally aspirated. Turbo/Nos/SC are a different story. -- you should run one with these engine setup types.
Do you feel a slight hesitation when you get on the accelerator with the check light #23? if so, that's the normal. That hesitation will go away if your ecu gets the KS disabled.
I dont know what code 2 is....its not listed on the HELMS ecu check code list for OBD1 ecus.

Yeah, I do feel a hesiation when the check engine light comes on, but only under partial throttle doing 70 MPH or so.

Maybe I didn't mention this earlier but this an obd - 0 Pr3 ECU. BTW, code 2 is a secondary o2 sensor that the obd - 0 ECU needs for some annoying reason.

....ah another reason to have your ecu reprogrammed, the 2nd 02 sensor can be disabled as well. I have a modified mugen PR3 program with numerous sensors disabled - which won't hurt your engine or performance at all. Again, hit me up if you're interested
