Default cable b series tranny HELP!!!

My cable tranny has an odd problem... it started with my speedo not reading right...always way too slow compared to my actual speed. I checked the usual suspect of the cable itself, the speedo, the gear drive. All are OK. I have the tranny out of the car now, and I reached into where the speedo drive goes, and I can spin the gear with my finger!! If I grab the input shaft and turn the tranny over "manually" and hold my finger against the gear that is supposed to drive the speedo drive, I can stop it completely WHILE TURNING OVER THE TRANNY!! I'm not sure how that gear attaches onto the differential, but mine is slip-sliding so easily it wont give me an accurate speedometer reading for anything!!!
Anyone know what or how to approach this when my tranny is apart??
