Default Building motor in a BICYCLE

I am thinking about a project... I want to put a motor in a regular bicycle. The only part I am stuck on is what kind of motor can I get. I am experiementing only and power does not matter at all, I just want to make it work. Do you guys think that a lawnmower engine will work or where can i get my hands on a motor that has a throttle. Thanks. (Anyone actually TRIED this?!?!?!)

Use an old weedwacker engine, it's much lighter.

Cheers,

Yeah, like 75 years ago when motorcycles were invented.

Seriously tho, unless you're good at making your own parts, it doesn't sound like a good idea.

The best bet would be the biggest weedwacker engine you can get. Then use the enclosed clutch system. Then all you have to do is find a way to rig it to the chain or wheel.

no need for a clutch, use a friction principal to power your bike. it is the same principal a tape machine works, a small roller pressed against a bigger roller, where the bigger roller is the rear wheel and the smaller roller is a shaft off the engine. although i would suspect slip would be an issue.

but i would a weedwacker engine "move" the bike? I know the speed is not an issue for me but i at least want something with some *****. What is the hp in a weedwacker motor anyways and does it have a throttle?

Zenoah makes RC engines up to 80cc that put out 5.5-6hp. Yes, that will move a bike. It may not yank a wheelie but once it gets moving it would get along quite nicely.

I've done this before. I put 6hp briggs and stratton side shaft motor on a 3 wheeled old person bike when i was about 12 years old. It was the fastest thing in the neighborhood. I used to race all the kids on those gopeds and go karts. It did about 35mph.

The best motors to use are from weedwackers since they have the drive shaft on the side. Use a centrifugal chain clutch on the driveshaft, but make sure the clutch tooth spacing is the same as the sprocket on your bike wheel. Also, it's important that the motor is attached real solid to the bike frame otherwise the chain is gonna be popping off a lot, unless you made some kind of spring loaded chain tensioner..

Good luck with the project, I used to make stuff like that all the time. It's fun!

PM me if you need any parts, I still have a ton of stuff lying around.

Im building something like that. Its more like a mini chopper. Im using a tecumseh 6.5hp engine. supposedly the torque convertor/engine combo im using is supposed to be good for 45-50mph.

i wonder if you could use a chainsaw and put in a regular chain and put it right on the sprocket of the bike...you could rig it up to still use the back 5 sprockets to have 5 gears

i did this on one of my spare race frames
it was cool as hell
i had a 6hp ohv go cart engine on it with a custom made clutch sproket (my uncle is a master machinest and i am a welder) that thing was fast as hell.
i took a set of 3 piece cranks and welded the spindle into the frame permanently so i could take the crank arms off and adjust them where needed. i was able to go almost as fast as i could without the engine on the track. hell i was even hitting the triple with it, but let me tell you this, when you crash and the hot *** engine sits on you it is not pretty.

im me if you need any help on doing this

Use a chain saw motor. It has a cluthc,, and has a sprocket already attached.

im takin a cr250 motor and dropping it in my c90....old *** honda bike. i will make it so the gearing is similar to that of the cr250 so i can smoke the tire down the road thru 2 gear and should be doin 80-90 top speed. i doubt it will be done any tmie soon tho, using a stock tuned pipe frmo the c90. looks sweet. fresh honda red paint. i really like the "mini-chopper" tho, very unique

do you think a chainsaw motor will work best? Also, how many hp do you think it takes to get the bike moving. Im going to try this on one of my ghetto bikes from Target so its pretty heavy.

does anyone know if a chainsaw motor would work? because a weedwacker engine has about only 1-2 hp while a chainsaw 3-5 hp. I checked out some pictures and it seem as if it will work on a bicycle. also, how are a chainsaw engine and a weedwacker engine different or is their setup about the same?
