Which block to drag with?
Hey everyone!
Well I have been out of the loop for a while when it comes to drag racing so I need some advice. Anyway, I am interested in building an engine strictly for drag. I was contemplating an H22. The idea will be to build a car to run 9's. Is this one of the better blocks to turbo charge or would another block make a better platform? Also, what kind of Boost & HP can these handle when built right?
The basic idea...
acquire an engine
complete build up and blue print
stand alone fuel management
turbo set up to coincide with engine
find a car to put it in
tranny and axles to hold the power
full cage and drag suspension
put it on a trailer and take it to the track for test and tune....

B series are more than capable to get into the 9's. There are more parts for them compared to the H series. Don't expect to go anywhere near the 9's if this is your first build. Drag cars take much time in research and tuning. It takes most people about a year to build a car and make it run right. Than it takes a few more months to get the suspension dialed. My previous drag car was a rotary powered RX7 Turbo. It had lots of goodies and it was running low 12's. Before that I was running an older Skyline while I was in Japan. Having the base knowledge of building that kind of machine is there, so no offence taken. It is amazing on how long it took for the technology to get here from Japan. I was working with turbos, additional injectors and mapping fuel curves etc 10 years ago while I was stationed there.

Thanks for the info about the B series motor. That is what I was looking for. This is going to be one of those engine builds that are done from the ground up over the course of a year. Nothing will be left untouched. When completed I will call Turbonetics to build a turbo specific for my application. So I will be looking at 18 months just for the engine (based on my budget). After that I will pick out a ride to put it in. Build the car to regulation and then start the tuning process. No point in going stage by stage and spending extra money in the process. I will just keep it tuned on the mild side while I work out any bugs and get my license.

My whole point behind this post was to get info on a platform that I am not familiar with and not to suggest a lack of knowledge. This is just where I decided to start some of research. If anyone has any knowledge of weak points on these blocks that may need a modification etc please pass that on. I would hate to spend serious money on a motor only to have it let go because of an overlooked mod……

The H22 is bigger, so it makes sense to go with it for a drag car, but then again if you look at what the other 9 second guys are running, I don't know how big of a difference it makes running a b18 or an h22, considering how bulletproof either one is going to be built up. Ask 'earl' here on h-t, or golden eagle mfg, or a bunch of other engine builders, maybe they'll give you an idea. Good luck.
