Default B16 idle problem w/ a bad radiator

well.... my radiator is leaking (blown)... i keep on having to refill it with water... cause too lazy to fix it right now... but anyways i've had this idle problem recently.. never had it before... when car is kind of cold and i'm at the stop light it idles at like 2 grand... then drops to 1 then back to 2 then to 1 then to 2 etc.... then i drive for liek 10 minutes car warms up... then stops.... then when i turn on my car another day.. even when the car is warm... it still does it.. but after 10 minutes it stops... what do you guys think it is.. do you think it is due to the blown radaitor? i mean i do have to keep the heater on from over heating when the temp gets up there... this problem has never happened before for the year i've had my b16.. throwning no codes except for code 21...which i don't know what that is... hlpe.. i'm lost please help

That is what happens when you're low on coolent. You idle goes up and down until normal operating temp.

Replace radiator, properly fill and bleed, bang, idle back to normal. Trust me on this.

If someone doesn't agree, explain, I will prove you wrong, too lazy to explain right now.

It's from air bubbles within the cooling system. The water pump is pushing water causing drag on the motor and when the air bubbles pass through the water pump the drag on the motor goes away causing the motor to rev up slightly. Replace your rad and bleed the system.

how do you bleed the cooling system?

Most of the older Honda's have an bleeder port; and during coolant refill, you would loosen the the bleeder port so air can be bleed out.

But on the newer Honda's they no longer have this ports. So once you refilled the system with coolant, you would have to leave the radiator cap of and warm up the vehicle until the cooling fan comes on twice.

Your problem is low coolant to the fast idle valve. The fast idle valve have wax that reacts with coolant temperture. So, with coolant temperture cold the wax keeps the valve open and closes as the coolant gets hotter.

So, with your radiator damage this will cause your fast idle valve to stay open. and, the ecu see's the an vaccuum leak and cuts the fuel to prevent over revving the engine.
