3rd gear transmission issue
In my car, when I shift into third, as soon as it engages, and I try to accelerate it pops out of gear.
the car has 45k miles on it, and has been babied in all honesty. Every other gear pulls 100% but I can not get third to move at all. I took it to the dealership but they claim it is the clutch. Is that possible? or are they just jerking my chain - I told them that I would not have them do the clutch job because I believed it was a 3rd gear syncro. They claim since there are no metal shavings in the tranny fluid - it is not a tranny issue.
Am I wrong in thinking this? Please advise. Thx

if it was the clutch it would not go into any gear properly, i have the same problem, my shift linkage was really stiff on the pivot part, i changed my shiftlinkage and it helped a lot, but it still does it.
It could be the syncros (low probabilty) but it also could be the setting screw (the one with the spring and ball). It keeps the gear selector from changing positions when its in gear. You can easily pull those out from underneath and check them. The ball sometimes gets stuck in the setting screw allowing the gear selector to move out of position. (pop out of gear) That would be the fastest and cheapest thing to do. Let me know if you need more info

-Jack the vehicle up
-Find the Reverse switch (the only electric sensor underneath)
-Next to the switch there will be two bolts (I believe they are 12mm) with a aluminum washer
-The one farthest from the switch is the 3rd gear setting screw for 3rd gear selector
-Unbolt it (Becareful) don't drop the ball
-Check and see if the tension on the spring is good and also check the ball for roundness.
-Sometimes the ball gets stuck in the setting screw when this bolt is over tightened(if the tranny has ever been rebuilt).
-You can compare it to 1-2 gear setting screw (the bolt closer to the switch)
-Maybe switch them to see if it makes any difference
-Get a flash light and look in the hole and see if the contour on the gear selector looks ok.
