yup. hondas r known for their 3rd gear grinds. put some SynchroMesh in the tranny. if this doesnt stop ur grinding then u will have to swap out ur old synchros.

Yup... either he's uncoordinated, but since Honda hydro trannies feel like butter usually, it's probably not the driver.
The tranny will need repaired at one point.

Not necessarily... a worn synchro will let the gear fall out on its own. They do more than just match the gear speeds.

Take it from someone who just built their transmission and not someone that reads on honda-tech.
buying synchros to fix a 3rd gear grind is like going to subway and ordering 9 slices of ham. It's only part of the equation. You have sleeve kits and you have gear kits (that include the sleeve)
Honda doesn't sell only the brass synchro. Why? Because one would be an idiot to replace JUST the synchros.
Yes it sucks, and yes it's costly. But compare the 350ish in parts to the $2000 that you'd spent at a tranny shop.
Wanna bitch and complain about how expensive gears are? Well, try making one yourself. They're THE most stressed part of your drivetrain. Why? Because they bear all of the engines load!
gear-speed has become rather expensive. Hondapartsdeals.com FTW!

2000 civic si sleeve kit 23623-P21-315 $162.83 from honda parts deals
be prepared to have to replace the gears though. They may not need it. But if they do and if you skip out, you'll just run into the problem later and kick yourself for not doing it right the first time.
Yes, I know that it sucks. I just spent over $2000 on a d-series transmission
