Koni Yellow snap ring failure.
Saturday night the chargers werent the only thing in san diego to fail. My drivers side Koni Neuspeed Yellow failed as well.
I was driving down the dark wet road and didnt see the massive pot hole in my lane. all i heard was the loudest bang ever, i was sure that i busted an oil pan.
I limped to the Shell station and looked at my car to see this.
I made a call and @ries and his Girlfriend came to my rescue (no jack in my car). we jacked the car up and took off the tire to find this...
the culprit was the failure of the snap ring. it came out of the groove in turn dropping the suspension completely on the drivers side front.
@ries went down the street to his place and got me a stock shock for the moment until i can get this issue resolved. but who do i bitch at about this. Koni becuase the snap ring failed or the city because of the massive pot hole that caused all of this? or both?
the Koni is scarred on the shock body its self to the point that i would want a koni dealer to look at it and see if it needs replacement or just a new ring. so here is one more trip to orange for me.

Re: Koni Yellow snap ring failure. (Shakes)
Was the snap ring properly captured by the lower spring perch? When you did the install was there any problem placing the snap ring? It seems to me that if the ring is properly surrounded by the perch it can't fail. Maybe Lee can see something by looking at the picture.

Re: Koni Yellow snap ring failure. (Shakes)
I had this problem on the race car for several events. It turned out that my coilover sleeves were slightly larger in diameter (we are talking a matter of millimeters here) causing the snap ring to not be properly captured.
In your case it could be anything from excessive grime on the perches when installed, to a poorly seated snap ring, or one that had been reused too many times and no longer had the appropriate tension.
As to who to be pissed at: The City! It took large hits to cause it on the racecar, even with the bad sleeves, so that must be a HUGE pothole!

Give me a call at the Koni office at 859-586-4100 ext 316 and we can discuss it and get some new rings and a perch out to you.
Normally we only see this kind of thing on cars with ill fitting coil-over sleeves (thus all the importance to use proper circlip capturing GC or Koni sleeves). Obviously you do not have a coil-over system on the car, this is a very rare occurance that we see only a couple of times per year and then on Preludes or Accords (the heaviest models) that are pretty well lowered and take a mighty whack from the road. Essentially hit causes your spring into coil bind going solid and then the remaining force of the impact extrudes the spring perch down over the circlip. The circlip itself did not fail, it was destroyed as a symptom of the impact. A new circlip is needed and a fresh perch is a good idea as well just to make sure everything is fresh.
Call me and we'll get you back going.

Potholes that can ruin all 4 volk wheels and rip of bumper off and crack the windshield all at the same time, that's what we have to worry about over here .

This never happened to me, but in the back of my mind I always thought it could
happen.
I have had 2 sets of Konis always liked them, thought that the response was a little slow though.
to Koni service
Sometimes some people do not appreciate what being a member of Honda-Tech is all about.

sorry to hear and see what happened/ very dangerous. this is why I don't use koni's for street cars. I had this happen to my friend and a couple of others I know and it is scary. I prefer welded on perches. lots of weight for a little circlip
