Default tranny pops out of gear, but goes back in all by itself?

car: 92cx hatch with a Z6 swap

its a customer car, but this is what i know about its history: it was driven over a curb, and the shift linkage got bent and started to hit the exhaust. it was also supposedly difficult to shift. he says it felt like it was running into something. the car was taken to another shop, where the linkage was heated and bent so that it didnt hit the exhaust.

now, the car will come out of 2nd gear when there is no load on the engine. hit the gas, and it will go back into gear all by itself without touching the clutch. no audible grinding or anything. just goes back in.

it has a short shifter of unkown origin.

any ideas? im thinking its the linkage, but im a little confused by how it just goes back into gear w/o touching the clutch...

it's called engine movement. When you step on the gas the engine "torques" in it's mounts and that's what pushes it back into gear. I would suggest that you get a new linkage put in that car as it's obviously screwed up and will end up screwing up the transmission.
