Default Easy fix to some shifting problems....pics

My crx sometimes had a hard time getting into gear. When in say, fifth gear, I could take the shifter and move it in a circle pattern while still in gear. There was no shift pattern, or, groove, as you could say. I replaced my shifter busings, which helped a little. The car drove fine, but, occasionaly, it was difficult to get in gear, especially at a dead stop. I got under the car and saw this:



and when wiggled, it would do this:

That pin holds the shift linkage into the tranny. That hole is worn into an oval shape. It should be a circle with no play. Since it was worn into an oval, that pin would move and sometimes let the linkage bend down, instead of going straight into the tranny.

I stopped by the junkyard, picked up the linkage from a civic, dropped it in, and there is a world of difference. I now have a shift pattern...lol. So, if you have a shifting issue, or alot of play, check this knuckle at the tranny and see what condition that pin/joint is in. There should be no play in it.

i just replaced my pin that holds the linkage into the tranny and all of my problems were solved...


but other then that.. i have 2 linkages that look like that...and couldnt figure out what was wrong...but now i know..

There should be no play where that pin is. There was a civic stacked on top of another at the junyard. Knowing something was wrong with my linkage, I walked under it, looked and saw how tight that was. I got under my car in the parking lot and felt how loose mine was. I bought that other one on the spot. Honest to god, it shifts as if the car is new again...

i have 88 crx si...i have a zc trannyand need to replace that...what shift linkage can fit in it? does 93 civic hatchback fit? or what?

no if you have a 88 crx ...only EF linkages will work..

Yes, part number 14 would be the part to replace. That joint on the end is what is pictured. The dealership said that part is not sold seperatly, only on the linkage. Any linkage from an 88-91 civic/hatch/crx will work fine. No others will work.

I have read numerous posts in the past about weird/bad shifting, so, i thought I'd post this up to help contribute to others and as "re-payment" for some of the help y'all have given me...hehehe

Not sure, mine was removed at the junkyard by a toothless guy with a bad limp.

The previous owner of my car had replaced the factory pin with a nut/bolt assembly, so, mine was easily removable.
