o2 sensor is like 60-70 bucks depending on where u go. an afc will cost u more, and i think its dumb, to go get an afc to cover up your o2 sensor problem. but if you plan on going turbo, then do whut you want.

Hi guys,

I just registered because I recently found out my O2 sensor needs to be replaced. I did a search and this forum came up. This thread seems perfect!

I have a 1998 Civic EX. A mechanic checked the car's computer (for FREE!?!) because of the engine light and he told me about the faulty O2 sensor.

So this item is easily available at places like O'Reilly's, Autozone, etc? That's good. Is there a place online to find the part cheaper than $60-70? Most importantly, should I be able to replace it myself. The mechanic pointed out the sensor to me and it looks like it should be simple mainly becasue it is easy to get to.

How important is this part for car's overall health? Mechanic said it could influence the catalytic converter. I thought it was just an EPA mandate to ensure clean air. I will replace it, but want to know the URGENCY of this problem.

I'd even like to know if this part is "universal" at least with Hondas. If so, would it be a good idea to find a car salvage yard and dig around for a used/functioning sensor?

Thanks,
Slobbie

P.S. What did the original poster mean when he said "...check engine light p0133"? What is p0133?

I'll reply to a few of my questions

Forget finding a used sensor. I'll just cough up the $62 or so for a new one at a local store.

I hope the part comes with installation instructions.

Thanks anyway,
Slobbie

I'd avoid Bosch sensors as well. I bought one. It was a POS and my cel was back on in hours.

I found some replacement tips on Autozone's website

http://www.autozone.com/servle...7.jsp

However, they only have Bosch brands. In fact, it seems most if not all local shops only carry Bosch.

O'Reilly has Delphi brand but no prices listed online. Oxygensensors.com has a couple brands like Walker (~$60) and Denso($76).

Anyone else have bad experiences with Bosch O2 sensors?

Slobbie

P.S. Thanks for the eBay link. I might just order from it.

Just make sure that you replace it with the correct sensor. in ek civics, the sensors are not the same. The primary and secondary have different prices and are not interchangable.

What are "ek civics"?

I understand the primary sensor comes before the catalytic converter, right? And the secondary/less important sensor comes after the CC.

I found a few CHEAP items on ebay:
http://search.ebay.com/oxygen-...hedZ1

Assuming the part number is exactly correct, would you guys buy one of these? I hate paying $10 for shipping, though.

EK = designation for a 6th gen (96-00) Civic. Even though there are very few (if any EKs) in the states, the 6th gen has taken on the EK designation because of the EK9 (Civic Type R).

You are correct about yoru primary/secondary 02 sensor though.

Cool. If my bid on an O2 sensor (not sure the brand) doesn't win, I'll definitely not get a Bosch. By the way, here's slammed_93_hatch's thread on O2 sensors:

I feel better about taking care of this problem with a minimal PITA. I'll post my results. Gotta love the internet.
