Tranny Gurus' - Need some Ideas/Help
Alright, I have a d15b inside a 90 hatch. I have a dx tranny (soon to be si) with a 91 act heavy duty pressure plate, 6 puck disc and 91 act prolite flywheel. My question is the following:
I have a noise coming from the tranny - when I push the clutch pedal down the noise stops. It's like a clattering - clak clak clak and it comes and goes. Mostly comes and stays, lol ! It goes up and down on pitch also like if I had a symphany in my tranny. I have no idea what it can be ? Pilot bearing, Throw-Out bearing, spring, xcetera ? Anyone with an idea your info will be of use. I've been driving the car like these for a while since I have plans on changing the tranny real soon - but of course I would like to learn what the problem is and possibly fix it for future refernce. Let me know.
Good Day,
RH.

Sounds like a spring in your clutch worked it's way out.
A bearing would normally whines for a while before it dies in a messy explosion of chunks and bits.

Thanks 4dr for a timely response - those were one of my ideas. I plan on putting in an SI tranny and hitting the track finally so it doesn't bother me to much but it can get a little annoying.
Can that cause any DMG to my clutch system ? J/W since as you can tell it's not a regular street disc and oem fly - it was a dent in the pocket but hey you want something to go for it.

Yes... if that's what it is.
I have read quite a few stories of the ACT springs popping out.

Most likely the input shaft bearing - this is a common problem on high-mileage D-series engines, particularly ones that have been abused and have been used with overly-aggressive aftermarket clutches.
If it has been making this noise (a "chattering" noise heard with the clutch out in neutral, which goes away when you push in the clutch) for a while, and gotten progressively louder, it is getting ready to blow, at which time it will destroy your transmission case.
If a spring had popped out of your clutch, you probably wouldn't be able to drive the car. Usually when that happens, the clutch stops working.

If I wanted to replace them with the new tranny - what do you recommend ? OEM ? The tranny I currently have I bought used from someone locally expecting it to be an SI tranny and it was a DX tranny with a grinding 3rd gear.
Also, my first gear sometimes doesn't catch when I put it in (regular driving). Would this be happening due to the current problem at hand ?

Well, how much do you want to spend on a new tranny?
Just about anything you pick up used these days is going to be 15 years old with at least 150k on it...most likely needing some kind of freshening up.

input shaft bearing. throwout bearing would do the opposite (noise with clutch pressed in).
my DX tranny had the same symptoms. I was just going to replace the bearing, but upon taking it apart, ISB (aka mainshaft case bearing) came apart in 4 pieces, all the ***** fell out too. Mainshaft had a deep ring gouged into it, rendering it unusable.
Bearing was so far gone that the shaft was wobbling and would throw the tranny from 2nd and 5th into Neutral.
Always grab the input shaft of a tranny and check for side-to-side play/slop before buying it. If there's noticable play, it will most likely have the sound you described. FYI, that type of bearing failure is usually caused by low oil sometime in the tranny's life, as it's the highest positioned bearing, and the one with the most load on it

AFAIK Davens is one of the owners of Effin Motorsports. He's been around a while and is a good guy.
