I was wondering if the synthetic motor oil is worth getting I was told it helps cars that have high mileage. my car has 150k+ and I have used the synthetic motor oil for some time now and that stuff is expensive i know alot of you say to get Honda motor oil but the nearest dealership is 50 miles away and i don't feel like driving that far evey time I need motor oil. So tell me what you gays think is the best oil to get for a civic with 150k+ miles on it Thank you.

 

im using the Max Life **** fro cars that are 75k imles or higher, its not synthetic, but synthetic is suppose to last longer, you don't want to be changing types of oil tho, engine no likey that

 

So Stick with the Synthetic and don't change it.

Once you go synthetic you can't go back to dino oil. Btw, I am not a gay.

It depends to some degree on how much oil your engine is using. Also if your car is a daily driver you don't need to change the oil every 3000 miles. As far north as you live synthetic would be good to stick with. My Civic's gas mileage suffers in the cold so you want the added cold weather thinness of synthetic to aid you in starting and gas mileage. I'd stick with synthetic. If it's using, switch to a thicker blend in the summer. Their is nothing magical about Honda oil.

 

I use the Valvoline Dura Blend and it seems to work well.

 

Synthetic oil lasts much longer than dino, but that's only a good thing if you have a filter that lasts just as long, i.e. 6k miles. AFAIK Fram is the only company that claims to have such a filter, but I don't really trust Fram.

IMHO, conventional oil is the way to go, simply because you can use a better quality filter by saving money on the oil.

 

just stick to valvoline 5-30 you'll be straight...

I've switched several times back to dino oil for various reasons. Works fine for me

I've mostly been with Full Synthetic from Mobile 1 5w30 for a while now, 70K miles? i dunno, i'm up to 117k now without any engine problems (knocks on wood)
and still runs perfect

As long as there's oil in there, you will have a film of lubrication, synthetic or dino oil. Actually, synthetics have better oil film lubrication properties than a standard oil, and have more ability to 'bond' with the parts and less likely to have the metal to metal contact that is stated in your reference.

The problem that used to happen when syns were first introduced had to do with the seals in the engine (like switching from R12 to R134a). That is no longer a concern. Period. Any newer vehicle can switch back and forth at will, since modern engines are designed to work with both.

I don't mean this as a flame in any way, but I think you have the wrong idea of 'film' of lubrication. It's not something that builds up, or can be degraded. When oil get's between the clearances of parts, the oil that goes between them is called the 'film'. Synthetics 'film' is more durable than standard, because it is harder to 'break down' synthetic oils (i.e. destroy the viscosity of the oil, as stated in your reference.) Dip a screwdriver into an open bottle of oil, or pull the dipstic out of the crank. The oil that is on there is the 'film' of lubrication that you're discussing.

I'd run regular dino, like pennzoil or something. I used synthetic for a while, but the extra money spent didn't seem worth it. Like was stated before, I'd rather save money there and get a good filter.
