motor mounts, or just inserts?
My motor quakes like all hell when I lift or accelerate. Would inserts be sufficient, or do I need to go ahead and get different mounts?
My car is still a street car and will remain so. Something that makes it feel like a tractor wouldn't quite work for me.

Does putting in harder mounts put the structure of the car in danger? Someone relatively smart is telling me via AIM that the unibody can be harmed if it is forced to absorb that much vibration.
1) stock mounts are relatively forgiving. they are made to absorb some of the vibration/movement the motor can produce under uneven load.
2) by replacing this with something stiffer, (or in extreme cases, welding motor to chasis), you will get a better feel for the car, and the motor wont "jerk around" on you.
3) the only long term downside i can imagine with doing something like #2 is that the itr spot-welded unibody will take the toll of coming apart much sooner. something has to take the vibration/movement. if you weld the motor to the frame, well, what do you think it is?
same thing goes for harder mounts. i know some who use metal mounts. Then again, I would reckon these people also think that frames are considered wear items

They are not solid mounts, they have bushing material in them so Yes they are stiffer, some say too stiff and some say that they are ok for everyday use. Anyway I would think that the Unibody would not be affected by the mounts as badly as solid mounts. but there is always a chance of something happening to the car, I personally would use them and not worry too much.
Don't forget each thing has pros and cons. stock mounts allow the motor/tranny to jump and thrash around big time and that does plenty of damage to the car, Ex: Axles/ CV joints go bad.
Owners choice... Just wanted to voice my Opinion

I wouldn't worry about the unibody of the car ... after what you already put (and will continue to put) your car through.
Inserts like ES (Energy Suspension) make a noticable difference.
I wonder if Steve ever actually installed my Mugen mounts in the turbo car.
Should be finding out in a few days one way or the other.
LOL! Now I'm just asking to **** people off ...

Hey! I wonder if your CW itr would turn yellow if Ross went to town on it

As far as I know, the car is straight. The situation Soup describes (car coming apart at the spot welds) is highly undesirable. Is there a happy medium? I want it.

Ross, I would say Spoon motor mounts are (possibly) the happy medium you seek; noticeably stiffer than OEM but won't rattle your teeth like urethane inserts.
inserts is all you need. I use prothanes on mine..it does slightly change the feel of the car, launches are more solid. The only downside is you get a lot of NVH, but you drive an R, so you're used to that...
Ross,
I would suggest the energy suspension lower and rear inserts first.
THEN, if they aren't enough I would suggest adding the prothane upper and rear to compliment them.
I have inserts for all 5 mounts and the prothane make the most difference.
I'd actually prefer stiffer, but I'm not willing to spend $$$ for race mounts.
ES would be good enough for you I'd think..... at ~$35
