Default bonehead move #4080

i hit a curb today getting onto a freeway onramp, i swear it jumped out of nowhere! it was like hitting a 4" deep pothole without even seeing it.

i was going about 15 - 20 mph when i hit it, and it sounded like hell when i did. ended up unseating the bead on my driver side front tire, and got off the road to change the flat. discovered i left my lug key in my toolbox in my garage. luckily, my sister came to the rescue with the box and my jack and i threw on the donut and went home.

after putting my stock wheels back on (had my a/x wheels on) i inspected the wheel that i had so cruelly thrashed. it looked straight, though to the naked eye it was hard to tell, and there appeared to be no cracks, but when i pressed down on the tire, i heard a pretty rapid leak. Looking at the rim, i could see a slight scratch/dent where i had hit the curb, but it looked fairly minor. i'm wondering though if it's ok to simply remount the tire, or if the wheel, tire, or both are done. the suspension hardware seems to be ok, no creaks or squeaks, and though i could have missed it, i didn't see any cracked arms or sheared bolts. thanks to my unwilling stock ride ht situation, my front lip looked mostly unscathed (it's been a rough week for my lip) and the undercarriage looked fine. i don't think the oil pan got hit, though i should probably double check that.

anyway, just goes to show that even when you're looking at the road, sometimes you can miss something...

an alignment check is also a good idea.

just take the tire to a shop and have them check it. have it reseated and then checked for pressure loss or (ghetto way) submerged under water for leaks.

lol, thats not a ghetto way. they put ur tire in the bucket with soapy water if u got a slow leak. But ya, remount check alignment, and dont let curbs jump out and bite your car.

Thats what I did a while back and it damaged the front sub-frame. Pushing the front left LCA mount in 2cm causing a 3*+ positive camber

here have a lok at these pics and you can see wat happened to mine, You had better check to see if you have the same problem, I ended p changine out the whole front suspension, sub frame, PAS hydralics etc for safe measure. Drives perfectly straight at 80mph now :-)

yummy

talking to a friend of mine i became worried that i might have damaged the tie rods and other suspension pieces, and judging by my fubar alignment right now, i think i you might be right abt the subframe. I hope someone has a parts car lying around somewhere, because i'd hate to get new honda parts, aka sign my financial life over to the honda parts dept...

anyway, once i get my damned springs/shocks, and do an alignment i guess i'll be able to see just how bad the alignment is and be able to make a decision on whether i want a whole new left front corner...

This is right on the spot. I had a curb jump out at me one time. It bent my enkei Rs-e's. took me two months to find another one, and the place i got it from said there were only 4 to be found in the us. Damn enkei, i wish they would make some more....

Definitly streched a Radius rod and maybe bent a control arm back at least. With this youll have more negative caster, i.e. the wheel will be everso slightly further back in the arch. Caster is there so that the shock absorbers can handle bumps at speed without bending everything back into the arches which was a problem on old cars. It also causes the wheel to straighten itself out of turns apparently.

When I damaged mine avoiding the idiot infront, I was going quite slow somthing between 20-30 thereabouts; But even at such low speed in an understeer situation, one thousand three hundred kilograms of car going through the front left wheel isn't good!

Oh and if you heard a noise whirring down (probly the 'sounded like hell' noise) as it run along the kurb then that was probly your outer DOJ (Double offset joint)'s bearings grinding to a halt. Time to jack your car up and inspect all the damage; Hope Its not too bad

Though you may be the bearer of bad news, thanks for the input. greatly appreciated.

after evening out my tire pressures, the alignment isn't off as much as it was this morning, but it's still noticeably off.

I was goig a little faster than you were so I doubt youll have as bad damage, The only reason I decided to change EVERYTHING out was because I wated it to drive perfectly straight thereafter
