Default Help! How do you know when cylinder #1 is at TDC?

Crank was turned without the timing belt being on, and now I don't know if it's at TDC for #1 cylinder. What other ways can you check to make sure it's at TDC on #1 cylinder?

Any other ways? Crank pulley is still bolted on, and I don't have the necessary tools to take it off.

take valve cover off, make sure pulleys line up while crank marker (single white line, not the 3 lines) line up on the timing belt cover marker.

This is TDC at #1 right?
#1 exhaust lob pointing at 10 o'clock, and intake pointing at 2 o'clock

Take the mark on the lower engine cover, it is around 10 or 11 oclock when ur lookin at it. It protrudes from the cover, then line it up with the single dash thats after the 3 small dashes on the crank pulley itself. Use the SINGLE dash! rotate counter clockwise

the crank pully has a TDC mark as previously described.

honda also makes it easy for everyone...and has a place on the cams to lock them into TDC. basically...take off the valve cover and turn the cams to TDC...as they won't be at TDC where they are right now...cause of the valve springs.

use a screw driver or something with similar bore to lock the cams...then remove the #1 spark plug and make sure the piston is at TDC...after aligning crank pully mark to mark on plastic cover...then put the timing belt on...installing belt over the exhaust cam sprocket first...then intake cam sprocket...then turn the motor over a few times...counter clockwise...then tighten the tensioner...and you're basically good.

its pretty easy once you do it a few times

all of that info sketches me out, tightening a tbelt isnt as easy as tightening the tensioner. yikes.

check it, your lower timing belt cover has a mark on it, move the crank pulley until the TDC mark meets up with the mark on the pulley.

please read how to do a tbelt install in the honda manual, the ways previously described are wrong.

the way HONDA has you do it, line cam sprokets until the arrows are pointing straight up, and the marks on the teeth are lined up perfectly. line up the crank pulley at TDC. (always rotate counterclockwise) install belt, tighten tensioner. rotate the engine COUNTER clockwise 3 full rotations. check to see if everything still lines up. Loosen the tensioner bolt 180 degrees. rotate the crank COU"NTERclockwise 3 teeth on the cam gear. (this is confusing but just think about it, rotate the crank until the gears move 3 teeth apart from each other).
hold it at that postion, tighten the tensioner bolt to spec.
done. the right way.

and dont stick anything into your valvetrain.

you can get the marks to line up and stay, i did, even with my huge cams and stiff springs, just work it a little.

honda gives you a place to lock the cams at TDC...and from my experiences that is the way to do it. i think the book even recommends that as well...although its been a while since i've done one.

correct, you made it sound like the screwdriver should be placed somewhere else haha.

there is a hole in the cam rails between the 2nd and third cylinder i believe, this will match up with a hole in the cams when they are placed at TDC. you can use a screwdriver or a punch to lock the cams there.
