Checking Codes??

I keep reading all these posts about people checking codes? How the hell do you check a code? Is it just on your cluster that says it? And whats a VAFC?

and a vafc is an external device that allows you to tune your setup, changing fuel maps and tables, along with a few other handy devices built into it.
