Ok so ive been losing like a bolt a week from the turbo to the manifold and i keep getting exhaust leaks. They're all melted into the lower splash sheild as souvenirs. So i get another bolt once again, with loctite and a new lock washer which do no good anyway. I had to come up with a quick fix with stuff already in my garage and heres my ghetto idea...take a small worm-type hose clamp like the kind most of us use on our charge pipes only smaller. Put it around the head of the bolt and tighten it so that the "excess" metal from tightening it is pushed against the turbine housing. Now when the bolt tries to come loose, the clamp will hit the turbine housing and will stop it.

Im going to tack weld them eventually but this seems to work for now. This has really been pissing me off lately...hope it helps some of you out.

 

Put a piece of thin sheet metal or a large fender washer under the bolt. After tightening the bolt, bend one edge down over the side of the exhaust housing to keep it from turning, and bend one edge up against the flat of the nut or bolt head. No more loosy loosy.

 

I was once told to use flywheel bolts since they are heat treated. I've never tried them but someone else on here might have.

 

You are using the wrong loctite. I believe there are some for different tempature ranges. Just find the right one and you would be fine. I sell that stuff and there are like 40 different kinds.

 

I used flywheel bolts for my downpipe, no washers or loctite and they NEVER come loose.

BUT, I used them on my dumptube and they did start to come loose. I just used crushwashers on them and never had problems again.

edit: The one bitch about flywheel bolts is that they are twelve point bolts, U have to have twelve point sockets and wrenches to tighten them. In my case the bottom downpipe bolt was more than a beeeeiiiaattccchh!!

 

do most people have problems with bolts backing out? even with red locktite or the strongest i can find

 

I had the bolts on my turbo come out so I used loctite on the studs and the bolts.. I also put 3 bolts on each stud..

 

Try using two cuped washers, facing in opposite directions.

This is a common problem with DSM's, but if you use the factory self-locking nuts you usually won't have an issue.

There are also all kinds of crazy industrial locking nuts, which are pretty cool. See what is avaliable.

You DEFINATELY need to at least use some kind of lock washer. The star shaped lock washers are MUCH MUCH better than the stupid crush ones, grab a bunch of those and try them out. That alone will probably fix your problem.

I drill a small hole and either put a cotter pin or piece of music wire where saftey is important to me (suspensin etc....). I would do the same on exhaust nuts if they kept backing out on me.
